According to the press release, Drnovsek has not been notified of a proposal by his Croatian counterpart Stjepan Mesic on a trilateral meeting of the Italian, Croatian and Slovene presidents, which Mesic presented earlier this week at a meeting with the Italian head of state, Carlo Azeglio Ciampi.
Drnovsek, however, is familiar with Ciampi's proposal that next year the three presidents "pay tribute, in an appropriate manner and at appropriate sites, to the victims of incomprehensible ethnic violence which burdened relations between Slovenes, Italians and Croatians in the last century".
Drnovsek responded positively to the Italian president's initiative and proposed that "before such a symbolic act of the three presidents, agreement should be reached on all relevant aspects, proposals, locations and models".
The Slovene head of state said that any well-intentioned initiative between the three countries, two of which are European Union members and the third a candidate for EU membership, was welcome if it contributed to efforts by Slovenes, Italians and Croatians to start cooperating, after historical traumas they experienced in the last century, the press release said.
