RIJEKA, Nov 4 (Hina) - Five Croatian citizens and a citizen of Serbia and Montenegro living in Croatia were placed in the custody of the County Court in the northern Adriatic city of Rijeka on Thursday on suspicion of involvement in human trafficking, local police said in a statement.

The Rijeka Police Department said that the suspects, aged from 23 to 40, were arrested on Wednesday following months of investigation. They allegedly operated in Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia-Montenegro, and Italy, smuggling people from Eastern to Western Europe across Croatia.

Charges were also pressed against an additional 16 persons.

The statement said that each illegal migrant had to pay 1,000 euros, and that 150 people had been smuggled across the border over the last year.

The police said the investigation was continuing.
