SPLIT, Oct 20 (Hina) - The president of Social Democratic Party (SDP) Head Committee, Tonino Picula, said in Split on Wednesday that Prime Minister Ivo Sanader and his cabinet were not leading the country in the right direction and that this was the main reason why Eurosceptism had increased in Croatia.

"We have not even started negotiating with the EU and already more than 50 percent of the citizens are worried about Croatia's admission to the EU," Picula told a news conference. He said a real danger would arise if Eurosceptism turned into Europhobia.

Picula commented on Sanader's statement at a press conference, when he said in response to a reporter's question whether or not he would extradite General Ante Gotovina if the fugitive general was indeed in Brela, that he could not answer such a hypothetical question. Picula said such an answer could cost Croatia dearly.

"Carla del Ponte has confirmed she is not interested in assumptions, and if the government continues to act this way and treat the issue of General Gotovina as a hypothetical one, then one should not be surprised at the content and the tone of the report by the chief war crimes prosecutor," Picula said.
