WASHINGTON, Sept 30 (Hina) - The US authorities have arrested Bosnian Serb Marko Boskic for concealing from immigration authorities his participation in the genocide against Bosnian Muslims in Srebrenica, the US Department of Justice has reported.

Boskic was arrested because in his applications for immigration as a refugee and permanent residence he failed to state that he had been a member of a Bosnian Serb unit which took part in the massacre of thousands of Muslims in the eastern Bosnian town in 1995.

The 40-year-old Serb, with residence in Peabody, Massachusetts, applied for immigration into the United States in 1999 while in Frankfurt. When asked about his military past, he said that he had only done compulsory military service in the early 1980s.

In 2000 he was granted entry into the United States and a year later, in his application for permanent residence, he again only stated his compulsory military service.

The Department of Justice said that Boskic was discovered after the UN war crimes tribunal in The Hague sent the US authorities a 1995 video-recording showing Boskic as a member of a Bosnian Serb unit receiving a decoration. The unit had taken part in the killing of Srebrenica Muslims in July 1995.

Boskic is awaiting trial and if convicted, he could be sentenced to a prison term of up to 10 years and pay fines worth 250,000 dollars. After serving the sentence in the USA, he may be deported to Bosnia-Herzegovina.
