LJUBLJANA, Sept 22 (Hina) - Slovene Foreign Minister Ivo Vajgl said in the Slovene television's prime time newscast on Wednesday evening that the arrest of a group of Slovene citizens by Croatian police on the border crossing of Plovanija was "inadmissible".

"I have the impression that attempts are being made to influence the outcome of the elections in Slovenia," Vajgl said in a phone interview from New York, where he is attending the annual session of the UN General Assembly.

Vajgl added that the conduct of Croatian police was non-European.

Slovene Prime Minister Anton Rop has already requested that the arrested deputies of the Slovene parliament and members of the Slovene People's Party, including Janez Podobnik, be released, without which there can be no constructive dialogue whatsoever, Vajgl said.

The minister said that he had already discussed the problem with Croatian PM Ivo Sanader and Foreign Minister Miomir Zuzul who are also in New York, and that he had informed Javier Solana about it.

Slovene authorities have requested an explanation from the Croatian ambassador to Ljubljana and

called back the Slovene ambassador to Zagreb for consultations.

According to Slovene TV stations RTVSLO and POP-TV, which reported from the scene of the incident, Croatian police arrested 14 persons who entered Croatia from Slovenia via a gravel road made by Josko Joras, refusing to present their documents to the police.

"There was no need for that because we were on Slovene territory. I told the police who I was and they could have checked that," Podobnik said in a live interview with RTVSLO. The TV station showed the Slovene citizens planting a lime-tree, the symbol of Slovene statehood, in Joras' garden.
