ZAGREB, Sept 22 (Hina) - Croatian Democratic Union MP Branimir Glavason Wednesday dismissed allegations by the Globus weekly that he wasselecting staff at the Defence Ministry, and described as ridiculousCroatian Journalists Association (HND) president Dragutin Lucic'sstatement "about kalashnikovs and media freedoms".
ZAGREB, Sept 22 (Hina) - Croatian Democratic Union MP Branimir Glavas on Wednesday dismissed allegations by the Globus weekly that he was selecting staff at the Defence Ministry, and described as ridiculous Croatian Journalists Association (HND) president Dragutin Lucic's statement "about kalashnikovs and media freedoms".

During a debate on a Croatian Radio-Television (HRT) business report at Tuesday's session of the HRT Programmes Council, Lucic, who is an external member of the Council, condemned the conduct of some MPs towards Programmes Council chairman Zdenko Ljevak and HRT director Mirko Galic, saying that "those who not long ago walked through editorial offices carrying kalashnikovs cannot be role models of democracy and media freedom today".

Lucic would not say who he was talking about, but today's press said he was obviously alluding to Glavas.

"I never entered any media company carrying a kalashnikov. This is nothing by a lie which, if repeated a hundred times, becomes the truth," Glavas said in a statement.

He went on to say that despite years of service Lucic did not have any special journalistic skills and was only seeking media attention.

Speaking at last week's session of the Committee on the Constitution, Rules of Procedure and Political System, Ljevak said that there had been a lot of interventions during the selection of the HRT staff, but he would not say who had exerted pressure, to which Glavas replied that Ljevak should resign over this statement or be replaced.

Glavas also dismissed "the sensationalist article in the Globus weekly", saying that the weekly was alleging "without any evidence or grounds that he was selecting staff at the Defence Ministry".

Glavas added that Defence Minister Berislav Roncevic was fully autonomous in his work and was implementing a unanimous policy of the government and the Croatian Democratic Union, and that he (Glavas) neither had any knowledge of nor interest in what was going on in the Defence Ministry.
