SPLIT, Sept 20 (Hina) - A five-day seminar on standardising telemedicine procedures in member states of NATO and its Partnership for Peace programme opened in the southern Croatian Adriatic city of Split on Monday.

The NATO-sponsored meeting was opened by the State Secretary at the Croatian Defence Ministry, Mato Raboteg, who said that the fact that the seminar was organised by Croatia "does credit to its armed forces and its medicine, and contributes to its efforts to join NATO."

Telemedicine makes it possible for highly specialised medical teams operating from a distance to provide support to field staff in situations such as war or natural disasters when their personal presence on the ground is not possible, Raboteg said.

Croatia will present its project of telemedicine on the Adriatic islands.

The seminar brought together some 30 distinguished experts in this branch from Belgium, Canada, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Romania, Turkey and the United States.
