BELGRADE, Sept 12 (Hina) - Two persons were seriously injured in thesouthwestern Serbian town of Novi Pazar on Saturday evening as aresult of clashes between followers of two Muslim-dominated parties --the Democratic Action Party
(SDA) led by Sulejman Ugljanin and theSandzak Democratic Party (SDP) of Human and Minority Rights MinisterRasim Ljajic, and police forces were sent in to prevent furtherincidents, the Serbian Interior Ministry said in a statement.
BELGRADE, Sept 12 (Hina) - Two persons were seriously injured in the
southwestern Serbian town of Novi Pazar on Saturday evening as a result of
clashes between followers of two Muslim-dominated parties -- the Democratic
Action Party (SDA) led by Sulejman Ugljanin and the Sandzak Democratic Party
(SDP) of Human and Minority Rights Minister Rasim Ljajic, and police forces
were sent in to prevent further incidents, the Serbian Interior Ministry said
in a statement.A group of SDA supporters attending an election rally attacked the SDP
offices in Novi Pazar on Saturday afternoon and later on SDA followers arriving
for the rally in a column of vehicles from Tutin shot at the SDP offices,
after which fighting broke out, Minister Ljajic told Belgrade Radio B92.
Beta news agency reported that the SDA blamed the incident on the
SDP.
Tension has risen and minor incidents have been recorded in Novi Pazar
over the last few days as the date of local elections in Serbia, set for
September 19, is getting near.
Serbian President Boris Tadic issued a statement on Saturday evening
calling on all the parties and their leaders in Novi Pazar to calm down. He
also urged the police to identify those responsible for the violence.
