ati/Udruge ZAGREB, Feb 23 (Hina) - The Independent Trade Union of Interior Ministry employees moved amendments to the Penal Code so as to make punishments for attacks on police officers more severe and introduce life imprisonment for murder of police officers, judges, state prosecutors and state officials .#L# In light of the fact that the number of assaults on police officers has been skyrocketing over recent years and the fact that in the last two years three policemen were killed on duty, this move is aimed at making police officers feeling more safe and cutting the number of assaults against them, the union's leader Zdravko Loncar told a news conference on Monday. The union's motion has been forwarded to the Interior Ministry, which should initiate alterations of the Penal Code. Commenting on the new draft state budget, Loncar said that funds for salaries were almost at the same level as those in 2003, but he did not see whether funds had been secured for paying the debt to police officers. Three trade unions of workers in the Interior Ministry have sued the government over violating collective agreements, and they believe that over a billion kuna of the debt should be paid to police officers.
