A rise in unemployment this January can be ascribed to seasonal
unemployment, and this trend will continue until March when a new
season of employment is expected to start, the Croatian Employment
Office (HZZ) director, Sanja Crnkovic Pozaic told a news conference on
Friday.
Unemployment was increasing in all counties, with the highest rise of
8.4 percent in Istria County due to the influx of those who stopped
working in the tourist industry, Crnkovic Pozaic said explaining that
this was still lower than in the same period last year.
She went on to say that the existent measures of the employment policy
would not be nullified and that they would be gradually replaced by
measures envisaged in a new action plan for job creation.
The implementation of the new measures, for which 490 million kuna
have been secured this year, will begin in March, after social
partners decide on them at a special conference to be organised by the
Croatian Economy and Labour Ministry in cooperation with the
International Labour Organisation.
Crnkovic Pozaic said that 17,278 registered unemployed persons had
been removed from the lists of the jobless in Janaury. Of this number,
8,777 found jobs, and the rest of them were erased from the lists for
various reasons including their failure to report regularly to local
employment offices.
