OSIJEK, Jan 16 (Hina) - Prime Minister Ivo Sanader called on citizens
of the eastern city of Osijek on Friday to turn out for early
elections for the County Assembly on January 18, and expressed
confidence his Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) party would win the
poll.#L#
"I am sure voters have recognised the quality of the HDZ programme not
only at national level, as proved by the outcome of the November 23
election, but also at county level," Sanader said, adding that he was
satisfied with his party's election campaign.
"The lengthy crisis in Osijek-Baranja County was unnecessary. It
proves that the previous government waited too long although it was
aware of the fact that at one point the County Assembly was left
without a quorum. The county has lost a lot of time (...) and on
behalf of the new government I can tell you that we will resolve
similar crises quickly and that we will not allow this kind of power
vacuum to last so long," he said.
Asked about future steps the government would take in the area, the
prime minister said his government supported "a balanced development
of all Croatian counties and regions". He urged swifter formation of
the county government and setting of priorities, after which the
government he said would "support development projects".
