ZAGREB, Jan 1 (Hina) - Croatian President Stjepan Mesic on New Year's
Day visited customs officers and police officers from Croatia and
Slovenia at the Bregana border crossing.#L#
Wishing them a Happy New Year and delivering presents, the Croatian
head of state said he had come there to show symbolically that
border-lines should bring together peoples and states rather than
divide them.
"I have come to say that Slovenia and Slovenes are our friends. We
would like to enter Europe together, they are a few steps ahead of us,
and we would like to catch up with them," Mesic said.
Asked to comment on the future relations between Ljubljana and Zagreb
in the light of the fact that Croatia had the new government, Mesic
said that the relations would not change in the negative direction and
that they could take only the positive direction.
We must solve problem by problem. It is difficult to settle all the
problems at once. We should address each open issue with the
willingness to reach agreement on it, he said.
Asked about his first task in the new year, Mesic said that it would
be to set up co-ordination between his office and the Ivo Sanader
government.
