SARAJEVO, Dec 16 (Hina) - The newly-appointed international High Representative to Bosnia-Herzegovina, Christian Schwarz-Schilling of Germany, has announced that during his term in office he will focus on economic problems in the country.

"The economy is my top priority. It is followed by the efficiency of government bodies and the transfer of authority from the Office of the High Representative (OHR) to the Office of the European Union Special Representative (EUSR)," Schwarz-Schilling said in an interview with Sarajevo newspaper "Dnevni avaz" published on Friday.

The High Representative said he would use the so-called Bonn powers, which give him the right, among other things, to sack domestic elected officials, only "as a last resort," adding that one of his goals would be to restore confidence in elected authorities and that he intended to achieve it by providing assistance and advice.

The Bonn powers would be abolished by the end of 2007 when the OHR would be dissolved in the present form.

Schwarz-Schilling also announced his active involvement in police and judicial reform and in streamlining the government. He underlined that cooperation with the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in The Hague remained one of Bosnia-Herzegovina's key tasks.

The newly-appointed High Representative said that the duration of his term in Bosnia-Herzegovina would depend on the speed at which the EUSR would replace the OHR.
