The two officials discussed cooperation, with Kirin saying that Croatian experts were willing to share their experience with their colleagues in Serbia and Montenegro with the aim of strengthening regional stability and the fight against organised crime.
"This can be achieved only through direct communication and without unnecessary red tape. Intensive cooperation between police forces is the key to success, especially along the border," Kirin said.
The two officials agreed that one should not exaggerate some events which were described as ethnically motivated, but let the police investigate their circumstances. Kirin said that an advisor on national minorities would soon be appointed with the aim of improving cooperation with national minorities.
Commenting on a recent event when the Croatian police detained the mayor of the Serbian town of Leskovac because his name was similar to that of a person wanted by the police, Kirin expressed regret, adding that the check-up was necessary and in line with regulations.
Simurdic also inquired about the ministry's policy in employing members of national minorities. Kirin said that the ministry was paying special attention to this issue, especially in areas populated by ethnic minorities.
