ZAGREB, Nov 7 (Hina) - A Croatian-German economic forum, which pooled representatives of some 30 Croatian and 13 German companies specialising in engineering industry, computer science, environmental protection and mechanical engineering, started in Zagreb on Monday.

The president of the Zagreb Chamber of the Economy, Zlatan Froehlich, said industrial cooperation and joint projects on the southeast European and European Union markets was a window of opportunity for cooperation between German and Croatian companies.

Today's meeting will help advance the two countries' economic ties, economic growth and development and trade.

Croatia-Germany trade last year amounted to USD3.4 billion, with Croatia's exports accounting for USD900 million and imports for USD2.5 billion.

Germany is one of Croatia's most important foreign trade partners, Froehlich said.

A total of 1.8 million German tourists visited Croatia last year, which is 20 percent of the total number of foreign tourists.

The Economy and Labour Minister of Germany's federal state of Saarland, Hans Peter Georgi, said today's meeting was aimed at advancing Croatia-Germany economic cooperation and enabling the countries' companies to sign new business deals.

He said Croatia had an important political and economic role in Southeast Europe, notably in the western Balkans, which he said German companies wanted to use.
