ZAGREB, Nov 3 (Hina) - The Croatian government on Thursday adopted decrees regulating levels of ozone in the air and critical levels of air polluters, as part of efforts to adjust the national legislation to the European Union's acquis communautaire.

Local authorities are bound to inform the public through the media whenever sulphur or carbon dioxide and ozone in the air reach critical levels.

In such cases other measures must be applied such as restricting or banning car traffic, keeping children, pregnant women and elderly citizens indoors, etc.

Over the last ten years, the quality of air in Croatia has improved and over- or moderately polluted air has been registered most frequently in the capital of Zagreb, the biggest Adriatic city of Split, the seaport of Rijeka and in the towns of Sisak and Kutina.

There are seven permanent stations for monitoring air quality, and two more are being constructed in Rijeka, Environmental Protection Minister Marina Matulovic Dropulic said, adding that data on air quality would be available online.

At today's session, the Ivo Sanader cabinet decided to allocate 240,000 kuna (approx. 32,480 euros) to six consumer associations for projects aimed at educating consumers.

The government launched the procedure to conclude a multilateral agreement on the establishment of European air space with Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, the European Community, Iceland, Macedonia, Norway, Serbia-Montenegro, Romania and the UN administration in Kosovo.

The cabinet also proposed a rise of between 8.8 and 9.5 percent in salaries of authorised state auditors.
