ZAGREB, Oct 25 (Hina) - The commission for the assessment of effects which the "DruzbaAdria" project can produce on the environment on Tuesday rejected a study on the topic as incomplete and insufficiently based on expert opinions.

As a result, the study on environmental effects of the Druzba Adria oil pipeline, going from Russia to the Croatian Adriatic coast, will not be sent for a public discussion. Most members of the commission proposed that the project should not be approved and now it is up to the Environment Protection Ministry to decide whether to greenlight the project or not.

Officials of JANAF, a joint stock company whose major activity is the transport of oil, said they believed that this third version of the study contained enough elements to be a topic of public discussion.

A JANAF representative, Jasna Danicic, also announced the possibility of lodging a suit with the competent administrative court.

The project on the transport of oil from Russia through several other European countries to the Croatian port of Omisalj for reloading on tankers elicited strong criticism in many local communities in Croatia as well as activists of ecological associations who fear that possible damage to the environment might be larger than a profit which the project could bring.
