ZAGREB, Oct 14 (Hina) - The Croatian police expected major traffic jams in Zagreb on Thursday and they could not have been avoided due to security measures introduced because of the summit of central European heads of state, chief of security Jakob Bukvic told reporters on Friday, adding that media reports about a total breakdown of the security system were "tendentious nonsense".

"Not a single security omission has been made and security services from participating countries have congratulated us on that," Bukvic said, adding that the safety of participants in the summit was the primary concern for the police.

Commenting on yesterday's traffic collapse, with citizens waiting in endless columns of cars for almost four hours, Bukvic said that traffic breakdowns during the rush hour on rainy days had been happening regularly in Zagreb over the last ten years.

"This was expected and we were prepared, and citizens have been informed by the media about possible traffic jams," Bukvic said, expressing satisfaction with "a job well done".
