DUBROVNIK, Oct 1 (Hina) - The southern Croatian coastal city of Dubrovnik on Saturday commemorated the 14th anniversary of the start of the 1991 aggression launched by the then Yugoslav People's Army (JNA), supported by volunteers from Serbia and Montenegro.

The first attacks on Dubrovnik and the southernmost area of Croatia were launched in early hours of 1 October. The targets of the shelling were the city of Dubrovnik, and the nearby areas of Konavle, Zupa Dubrovackam Rijeka Dubrovacka and Dubrovacko Primorje.

During a three-month-long siege, Dubrovnik, the old town of which was put on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1979, was without electricity and water supplies and telephone lines were also cut off. The attacks came to a head on 6 December 1991, when the city of Dubrovnik was exposed to attacks from the sea and air as well as from strongholds of the JNA and Serbian and Montenegrin reservists on the ground.

The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) sentenced sentenced former JNA high-ranking officials, retired General Pavle Strugar to eight years of imprisonment and retired admiral Miodrag Jokic to seven years of imprisonment for the 1991 shelling of Dubrovnik.

During the aggression against this Adriatic resort, over 300 civilians and Croatian soldiers were killed, 33,000 people were forced to flee their homes, and 336 citizens were taken to concentration camps in Bileca (Bosnia-Herzegovina) and Morinje (Montenegro).
