BELGRADE, Sept 12(Hina) - Belgrade's electronic media on Sunday carried part of an interview which Dragan Vasiljkovic, aka Captain Dragan, gave to an Australian TV station in which he underlined that he was proud of his participation in the 1990s war in Croatia.

I am very proud of my participation in the war in Croatia. I think every Australian should be proud of what I did there, Vasiljkovic said according to Belgrade's media.

In the interview, Vasiljkovic said he had nothing to do whatsoever with war crimes committed in Croatia in 1991-5.

And of course I am not hiding. The first thing I did upon returning to Australia was to report to the authorities. I am ready to bet on everything I own that the Australian government will not extradite me to Croatia, said Vasiljkovic.

Australian media said on Saturday the Australian police opened an investigation aimed at establishing if Vasiljkovic had broken Australian law by commanding Serb paramilitary units during the war in the ex-Yugoslavia.

Reports recalled that Croatia announced it would request the extradition of the 50-year-old Vasiljkovic, who resides in Perth, on suspicion that he committed war crimes during the 1991-5 war while he served as commander of Serb paramilitary units in Croatia.

Australia's ABC radio said that Vasiljkovic, who has Australian citizenship, used to be a soldier in the Australian army.

The Australian daily said on Friday that Vasiljkovic returned to Australia last December and was currently a golf instructor in Perth.

Vasiljkovic told this daily he had been training Serb recruits, interrogating captured enemy soldiers and that he had killed in combat.

He admitted to having commanded paramilitary troops during the Balkan wars but denied having committed war crimes, and labelled such accusations as war propaganda.

He also denied having been involved in the rape, torture and killing of Muslims and Croats, and claimed he was not a war criminal and that the people under his command had not committed crimes during combat.
