BELGRADE, Sept 30 (Hina) - Serbia and Montenegro's Foreign Minister Vuk Draskovic on Friday sent a note to his Croatian counterpart Kolinda Grabar Kitarovic protesting over an attack on the headquarters of the Serb Orthodox episcopate for Dalmatia in Sibenik on Thursday evening.

According to a statement issued by the Serbian ministry, Minister Draskovic instructed Serbia and Montenegro's Ambassador to Zagreb, Milan Simurdic, to visit Sibenik and ask the local authorities to fully guarantee security for Serbs and their places of worship.

In his note to the Croatian minister, Draskovic said the latest case was more than an incident because "it is difficult to explain how it was possible for the mob to demolish the building in downtown Sibenik and call for lynching Serbs, while police arrived at the scene only after they were called by the Orthodox nuns who were attacked and after the attackers withdrew".

Draskovic recalled that since May this year around 20 attacks on Serbs and their property had been reported in the Sibenik area, including the killing of a man, whose killers he said still remained at large.

"Prompt identification and punishment of the perpetrators and organisers of crimes against Serbs in Sibenik County and other counties is in the interest of promoting relations between our states and peoples, equally committed to the common European future," Draskovic said in the statement.

Croatian President Stjepan Mesic today sent a letter to the Serb Orthodox episcope for Dalmatia, Fotije, expressing his regret at the news of the attack by hooligans on his residence in Sibenik.

"I sympathise with you and believe that the police will find the perpetrators and establish the motive for the attack in the shortest time possible. The Republic of Croatia wants to provide, not only through laws but also through actions, peace and security for all of its citizens, regardless of their nationality and religion," Mesic said in the letter.
