ZAGREB, Sept 19 (Hina) - Croatian President Stjepan Mesic most strongly condemns the terrorist attack carried out with an explosive mail device against the British Embassy in Zagreb on Monday, the Office of the President said in a statement.

In a message to the British Ambassador, Sir John Ramsden, President Mesic expressed solidarity with the ambassador and all embassy staff, saying he was confident that competent Croatian bodies would find the perpetrators in the shortest possible time, the statement read.

The explosive device went off around 7.30 am and one person sustained light injuries in the blast, a spokeswoman for the embassy told Hina.

The explosion occurred in the post room, spokeswoman Tessa Fras said.

Officials at the Croatian Ministry of the Interior and the Zagreb police department would not comment on the incident, an investigation is under way and the embassy in the Alexander von Humboldt Street in downtown Zagreb is being guarded by a large number of police. According to the latest reports, police have also been deployed in nearby streets and the Alexander von Humboldt Street has been sealed off.
