ZAGREB, Sept 19 (Hina) - A man who sustained minor injuries in a blast in the British Embassy in Zagreb on Monday morning is a Croatian national, the spokesman for the Croatian Interior Ministry, Zlatko Mehun told Hina.

According to Mehun, the Zagreb police received an information from the British Embassy at 0734 hrs Monday that an unknown device had exploded. The Embassy asked for the police intervention. The local police in cooperation with British representatives are conducting an investigation, the spokesman said.

The spokeswoman for the British Embassy in Zagreb, Tessa Fras, told Hina that the device exploded in the embassy's post-room at about 07.30 am Monday. She added that British Ambassador John Ramsden had come to the embassy and that security had been stepped up.

Asked whether the embassy's building was evacuated, Fras said that some members of the staff remained in the embassy.

It has been reported that the injured person, who is an employee in the embassy, was taken to Zagreb's emergency hospital.

The Zagreb police decline0d to give any more detail, citing the Vienna convention on diplomatic relations. The area of an embassy is an ex-territorial area and the British embassy is under the jurisdiction of the British authorities. Croatia can offer assistance only at the request of the country in question, the head of the Zagreb Police Chief's cabinet, Krunoslav Borovec said.

The area around the building which houses the British Embassy in Alexandera von Humboldta Street in the centre of the city is cordoned off. Police officers are being deployed in the entire area and the street is closed to traffic, according to the latest reports.
