ZAGREB, Sept 19 (Hina) - A Croatian national working at the British Embassy in Zagreb was injured when an unidentified device went off in the embassy on Monday morning, but his life is not in danger, sources at the Zagreb Accident Hospital said.

"The (patient) sustained several minor injuries to his left shin," the hospital's manager, Gojko Buljat, told reporters. He would not reveal the identity of the injured man, who was hospitalised after 10 am.

Buljat said he did not know how the patient sustained the injuries and added that he would remain in hospital and be monitored for the next 24 hours, although there was no need for such a measure. He explained that this was common procedure in similar cases and that they wanted to protect the patient from public pressure.

Hospital representatives did not allow reporters to talk to the injured man who is being guarded by the police.

Officials at the Ministry of the Interior and the Zagreb police department would not comment on the explosion, which occurred around 7.30 am. The investigation is under way and the embassy building in the Alexander von Humboldt Street in Zagreb is being guarded by a large number of police officers.

Police have been deployed in nearby streets as well and the street where the embassy is located has been sealed off.

Embassy spokeswoman Tessa Fras said the explosion occurred in the embassy's post room, but no information has been released on the type of the explosive device.
