Vis and its village of Komiza will host British WWII veterans who will visit the island to pay tribute to their fellow soldiers killed in the war. The British Embassy and local authorities will also organise a ceremony in Vis and Komiza to mark the 60th anniversary of the end of WWII.
Some 6,000 British commandos and members of the Royal Navy arrived at Vis in 1943 and 1944 to help Josip Broz Tito in the fight against the forces of the Axis.
The base in Vis had a runway for planes delivering food, soldiers and weapons. The runway, built by the British, still exits.
