In that respect Croatia is on the level of the Czech Republic. The percentage in Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands, Finland and Iceland, for example, was over 70 per cent, in Slovenia 50 per cent, while in other transition countries the percentage was lower than in Croatia.
The survey conducted in July on 1,000 people showed that the highest number of Internet users were in the Zagreb area, 36 per cent, while northern Croatia with 11 per cent, Slavonia with 12, and Lika, Kordun and Banovina with three per cent are the regions where the Internet is used the least.
The majority of the people said they used the Internet for e-mail, as many as 69 per cent, and to learn about daily events, read newspapers, and browse for books.
The majority of Internet users are in the 15-24 age group, while the least numerous are those older than 55.
The survey also showed that men and women equally use the Internet. Fifty-five per cent of Internet users are students and people with secondary school education, while 35 per cent are people with university degrees.
