BELGRADE, May 14 (Hina) - Senior Serbian state officials reiterated in Belgrade on Saturday that Kosovo's independence was unacceptable and that the existing border between Serbia, Albania and Macedonia could not be renamed Kosovo state border.

"The best solution for Kosovo is broad autonomy with international guarantees," Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica said at a session of a senior body of the Democratic Party of Serbia, which he leads. Kostunica added that the Serbian state leadership and the leadership of the state union of Serbia and Montenegro shared the same position on the most important issues of the Kosovo problem, such as the issue of standards and the status of the province.

Addressing a convention of the Serbian Renewal Movement, which he leads, Serbia and Montenegro's Foreign Minister Vuk Draskovic has said that the border with Kosovo should be "a European border, existent on the map, but non-existent in reality, as the symbol of a new, European and humane status of Kosovo and the entire region".

Draskovic said that Serbia and Montenegro wanted European standards in the protection of Kosovo Serbs, as well as the reconstruction of destroyed houses, churches and monasteries in the province, guarantees for the return of refugees, and decentralisation of authority.

A statement issued on Friday by the office of Serbian President Boris Tadic said that the head of the UN mission in Kosovo, Soren Jessen Petersen, had informed Tadic that his mediation in scheduling a meeting between Tadic and Kosovo President Ibrahim Rugova had been unsuccessful. Tadic had proposed that the meeting be held in Belgrade or Pristina, and Rugova refused the proposal, saying he was willing to meet Tadic at some other location.
