SKOPJE, April 20 (Hina) - Macedonian President Branko Crvenkovski has said that the change of Macedonia's constitutional name is unacceptable, but that Macedonia is ready to talk with Greece about a name that would be used in bilateral communication.

This is Crvenkovski's first reaction after Greece reopened the issue of Macedonia's name.

Changing Macedonia's constitutional name that is being used in international communication is unacceptable and this was made clear to the mediator of the talks at the U.N., Matthew Nemitz, and all international factors, Crvenkovski was quoted today by all Macedonian papers as saying to the private TV station Sitel.

Having in mind the sensitivity of the Greek public, Macedonia is ready to continue the talks on finding a name that would be used in relations with Greece. However, the only name to be used in the UN and in international communication is the name Republic of Macedonia, appropriately transcribed and without new precedents, Crvenkovski said.

Greece reopened this issue after the United States recognised Macedonia under its constitutional name last November.

Apart from intensive diplomatic activity in the United States, aimed at convincing it to change its decision, and in the European Union, aimed at dissuading its members from following the US example, Greece launched the reopening of the talks in the UN which had lasted since Macedonia's admission in 1994 under the provisional name of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM), adopted at Greece's proposal.

The mediator of the talks between Macedonia and Greece, which have been held occasionally over the last ten years, is American Matthew Nemitz.

Nemitz and Macedonian Ambassador to the USA Nikola Dimitrov met recently at Greece's insistence.

The Macedonian news agency MIA reported that the meeting heard again Greece's proposal that the name FYROM be replaced with the name Republic of Macedonia - Skopje written in the Cyrillic script and without a translation. Under the proposal, this name would be used in the UN and by all countries in communication with Macedonia.

The Green parties from Denmark, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Spain in the European Parliament recently submitted an amendment proposing that the EU recognise Macedonia without delay under its constitutional name.

Although only 140 members of the European Parliament voted for the proposal, the sponsor of the amendment, Anders Samuelson of Denmark, told a Macedonian paper that this was only the beginning of a lobbying campaign and that he was confident Macedonia's name would be recognised by all in several years.

In the meantime, the German and British parliaments adopted declarations recommending that their governments recognise Macedonia under its constitutional name.

Macedonia has so far been recognised under its constitutional name by 106 countries, including permanent UN Security Council members Russia, China and the United States.
