LJUBLJANA, March 13 (Hina) - The Croatian-Slovene commission for historical issues will convene for the first time in Ljubljana next weekend, Slovene television said on Saturday evening citing a source at the Foreign Ministry.

The same source confirmed the two countries' governments would meet in the spring, Slovene television said.

Prime Minister Janez Jansa told the press yesterday his cabinet continued to support Croatia's accession to the European Union in the near future, saying this was in Slovenia's strategic interest, according to the STA news agency.

Jansa ascribed part of the blame for the deterioration of Croatian-Slovene relations in the second half of last year to his predecessor Anton Rop's ill-advised reactions to border incidents.

Jansa said the Croatian government had assured Slovenia it was willing to hold constructive talks on current issues, which he added opened new possibilities for closing bilateral issues.

Jansa said the agreement he reached with Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader in January to set up a historical commission provided a framework for constructive dialogue.

He also underlined the importance of the two countries' agreement to avoid border incidents until a final solution was found to the sea border. He added such a solution was more likely to be found if it was sought within European frameworks and if Croatia integrated into the EU, rather than if it was destabilised.
