ZAGREB, March 11 (Hina) - The European Union and the Croatian government will invest about 10 million euros in the reconstruction and modernisation of the Bregana border crossing between Croatia and Slovenia, which started on Friday with the laying of a foundation stone.

Reconstruction works are part of the EU CARDS 2001 project called "Integrated Border Management", which aims to organise all border services in one place in order to facilitate the flow of passengers and goods.

Customs, police, sanitary and all other necessary services will be available at the Bregana border crossing, said the head of the European Commission Delegation to Croatia, Jacques Wunenburger, who laid the foundation stone together with Croatian Finance Minister Ivan Suker and the Mayor of Samobor, Zeljko Adamek.

The construction of three buildings for passenger and cargo transport, worth 4.65 million euros, will be financed with a donation from the European Union, while road reconstruction, the construction of infrastructure and other necessary facilities will be financed by the Croatian government, which will provide about 40 million kuna.

The Bregana border crossing will have 15 traffic lanes, 10 of which will be designed for passenger transport and five for cargo transport, and a car park with 230 parking spaces.

Bregana is Croatia's busiest border crossing, with an average of 1,000 trucks, 60 buses, 7,000 cars and 25,000 passengers crossing the border every day.
