LJUBLJANA, Feb 17 (Hina) - The Slovene Transport Ministry said on Thursday it had received a letter from Brussels saying that Slovenia had correctly interpreted a European regulation on the basis of which it imposed a charge on Croatian hauliers transporting goods to European Union member countries.

Pursuant to the European regulation of 1993, two weeks ago Slovenia imposed on Croatian hauliers a charge equivalent to three percent of the value of their vehicles because Croatia is not part of the common customs union. This charge is otherwise applied in case of temporary import of vehicles.

The position of the EU General Transport and Energy Administration is that Slovenia cannot define transport conditions in the European Union on the basis of a bilateral agreement with Croatia, and that other EU countries should take the same position on hauliers from third countries, Transport Ministry official Matjaz Vrcko told the Slovene news agency STA.
