ZAGREB, Feb 23 (Hina) - All parties in the Croatian parliament on Wednesday supported amendments to the law awarding the promotion of children's rights, but warned that declarative norms would not encourage the promotion of children's rights or improve the position of children in society.

Under the amendments, which are of a technical character, the authority to award the promotion of children's rights is transferred from the Health and Social Welfare Ministry to the Ministry for the Family, War Veterans Affairs and Inter-Generational Solidarity.

The Social Democratic Party said the amendments showed that the government, namely the Ministry for the Family, did not intend to adopt a serious law that would deal with the issue of children's rights.

A representative of the Croatian Party of Rights wondered under what criteria awards for promoting children's rights would be given.

An MP of the Istrian Democratic Assembly said that a safe legal environment for children and their parents must be created so that children's rights could be respected.
