ZAGREB, Jan 22 (Hina) - Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader said on Saturday that a joint Croatian-Slovene historical commission for border delimitation would have a twofold task -- to highlight brilliant relations between the two countries and provide information in making political decisions.

If Croatia rejects Slovenia's initiative to form a joint historical commission, it will show that it is afraid of such a commission, Sanader told reporters after a meeting of the presidency of his Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) party.

"I don't think we should have any reason to be afraid. Besides, this commission will not be authorised to propose delimitation in the case of border points on which we have reached no agreement in the past 15 years," he added.

The commission would be able to inform the public in both countries of certain facts that are not known very well. In the end, we would resolve the matter either through a joint agreement or we would have to go to international arbitration, the Croatian prime minister said.

Recalling that Slovenia had had similar commissions with Austria and Italy, Sanader said that the proposal for a joint session of the Croatian and Slovene governments in Croatia was received very well by Slovenia.

The historical commission will not be under any pressure and will bring about progress in terms of shedding light on relations between the two countries, Sanader said.
