ZAGREB, Feb 15 (Hina) - The Zagreb police reported on Tuesday that about 600 police officers would be engaged as security personnel during Friday's inauguration ceremony when Croatian President Stjepan Mesic will be sworn in for his second term in office.

To tighten security during the ceremony in St. Mark's Square in Zagreb, special and intervention police forces will also be engaged, Zagreb Police Chief Dubravko Novak told a news conference on Tuesday.

The police confirmed the arrival of several top state officials from abroad as well as Croatian high-ranking officials.

On Monday the President's Office said that the inauguration would be attended by presidents Svetozar Marovic of Serbia and Montenegro, Branko Crvenkovski of Macedonia, Alfred Moisiu of Albania, Traian Basescu of Romania, Georgi Parvanov of Bulgaria, Ivan Gasparovic of Slovakia, Aleksander Kwasniewski of Poland, and the three members of the Presidency of Bosnia-Herzegovina - Dragan Covic, Sulejman Tihic and Borislav Paravac. The new Ukrainian president, Viktor Yushchenko, announced his attendance in principle when he met President Mesic at a recent ceremony marking the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp.

More statesmen are expected to attend the ceremony, but they are yet to confirm their attendance, Mesic's Office said yesterday.

A large number of Croatian citizens are also expected at the ceremony. All of them will be checked by police before they enter the space allocated for them in the square.
