"These are just media speculations for us," Interior Ministry spokesman Zlatko Mehun said and added that Interpol's office in London informed the Croatian police the bills found in Croatia were not from the Northern Irish bank that was robbed last year.
Jutarnji List reported on Friday that the police arrested two Croatian citizens over a transaction involving the bills stolen in Northern Ireland. According to the daily, one of the arrested men has deposited the stolen British pounds in Zagrebacka Banka on several occasions.
Mehun said that some bills which the arrested Croatian citizen deposited on Monday afternoon had similar serial numbers to the stolen bills.
He added that the two arrested men were released after Interpol's investigation showed the bills the two Croats had were not stollen in the said bank robbery.
"The investigation is still under way, but we have released the two men," Mehun said.
The so-called robbery of the century took place on 20 December 2004. Some 20 criminals raided the Northern Bank headquarters in Belfast, stealing a total of 26.5 million British pounds.
