ZAGREB, Feb 5 (Hina) - The leader of the strongest opposition Social Democratic Party (SDP) has said that in case of the postponement of Croatia's EU membership talks because of the failure to transfer the runaway General Ante Gotovina to the Hague-based tribunal, the country will face a governmental crisis the outcome of which will be early elections.

Ivica Racan said in his interview with the Ljubljana-based Dnevnik daily on Saturday that Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader had "put all his eggs in one basket," in the success in the European Union" and in case of the failure he would have to render an explanation.

Croatia can start entry talks with the European bloc on 17 March provided that it fully cooperates with the Hague-based UN war crimes tribunal in The Hague.

Racan told the Slovene daily that the current government led by Ivo Sanader should be held responsible for the developments in the relations with the Hague-based tribunal and the European Commission, but he added that it was not in the SDP strategy to topple the incumbent cabinet.

Commenting on rumours about possible coalition between the SDP and the ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), Racan ruled out that possibility explaining that the two parties had opposing standpoints on major topics of the home policy.
