Parliament appoints new conflict of interest commission

ZAGREB, Jan 20 (Hina) - The Croatian Parliament on Thursday appointed anew Conflict of Interest Commission.
ZAGREB, Jan 20 (Hina) - The Croatian Parliament on Thursday appointed a new Conflict of Interest Commission.

MPs comprising the new commission are Marija Bajt of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), Josip Leko of the Social Democrats, Pejo Trgocevic of the Party of Rights (HSP), Nikola Mak, an ethnic minority representative, as well as eminent public figures Zlata Gjurdjevic, Desa Mlikotin-Tomicic and Zorislav Antun Petrovic.

The commission will elect a chairman at its constituent session. This, according to previous announcements, will be Leko.

MPs appointed to the commission will remain its members until the end of their parliamentary term, while the other members have been appointed to a seven-year term.

By appointing a new Conflict of Interest Commission Parliament put an end to the work of the former commission which, due a series of conflicts between the ruling party and the opposition, always lacked quorum.

Parliament appointed the new commission, over whose composition the leaders of parliamentary parties had previously reached a consensus, without a debate. Only six MPs abstained from the vote.

Due to a remark by Anto Djapic of the HSP, Parliament did not vote on the HDZ's motion to postpone voting on a proposal that Croatia exit the Druzba Adria oil transport project until a commission estimating the project's impact on the environment completed its study.

Despite Djapic's objections, Parliament also postponed voting on the HSP's motion to set up a commission which would probe the leaking of transcripts from the President's Office.

Speaker Vladimir Seks said he had been informed that the State Prosecutor's Office had launched proceedings against an unidentified perpetrator for unauthorised handling of transcripts, and that Parliament would not vote on the matter until the proceedings were over.

Parliament wrapped up today's sitting by ratifying several international agreements and is set to resume its 12th session on February 2.
