Mesic does not rule out possible irregularities in vote count

ZAGREB, Jan 4 (Hina) - Presidential candidate Stjepan Mesic said onTuesday that he did not suspect the validity of the vote count in lastSunday's presidential elections, but that he did not rule out thepossibility that there were some irregularities, especially as regardsthe vote count in Bosnia-Herzegovina.
ZAGREB, Jan 4 (Hina) - Presidential candidate Stjepan Mesic said on Tuesday that he did not suspect the validity of the vote count in last Sunday's presidential elections, but that he did not rule out the possibility that there were some irregularities, especially as regards the vote count in Bosnia-Herzegovina.

"I do not have any suspicions as regards the vote count, but I do not rule out the possibility of (some irregularities)," Mesic said at a news conference in his election headquarters.

Although he believes that the election campaign was conducted as expected, except for some imputations and libels against him, Mesic main objection concerns a promise of financial assistance which he said the candidate of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), Jadranka Kosor, gave Croats in Bosnia-Herzegovina.

The HDZ of Bosnia-Herzegovina has thanked all those who voted for Kosor, which means that she achieved success with her message about aid to Bosnian Croats, but only some Croats, since those living in the Serb entity will not get anything, Mesic said.

He also objected to the HDZ placing Kosor's posters at places where previously posters of a government-sponsored programme were displayed, which he claimed proved that the Ivo Sanader cabinet was financing Kosor's campaign.

Mesic said he could understand the dissatisfaction of presidential candidate Boris Miksic and his doubts about the final part of the vote count, when a run-off election slipped out of his hands.

"I can understand him, but I cannot understand why he brings me in connection with those election results, I was leading the whole time with more than 50 percent of the vote, only to drop to 49 percent. I see no reason why Sanader and I should agree that I should drop from 51 to 49 percent of the vote, I see no logic in that."

Mesic called on Miksic to prove his doubts in legal procedure before competent institutions.

He condemned yesterday's rally of Miksic's supporters in front of his home, stating that he expected an explanation from the interior minister as to why the police failed to respond to the rally if it had not been announced and if it disturbed citizens.

Mesic said he would call on all citizens to go to the polls on January 16, especially those who did not vote in the first round. He also said he expected greater engagement in his campaign of the opposition parties which supported his candidacy.

Mesic said he expected much more than 50 percent of votes in the second round and that he was looking forward to a one-on-one debate on television with Jadranka Kosor.
