ZAGREB, Dec 15 (Hina) - The Croatian Parliament on Friday adopted a law on credit unions and amended the Banks Act under which savings and loan cooperatives will have to be transformed either into credit unions or savings banks.

Credit unions and savings banks will be able to do business only with its members and in the domestic currency. They will not be able to be involved in factoring, leasing, trade in securities or in international financial transactions.

The law is aimed at adjusting the financial sector to European Union standards.

The Sabor ratified several international agreements and protocols, including a protocol to the Stabilisation and Association Agreement introducing quotas for customs-free export of sugar to the EU market, amounting to 180,000 tonnes per year. The protocol was supported by 81 deputies, while 14 voted against.

MPs also amended the law on the prevention of conflict of interest and adopted changes to the law on the maritime domain.

The 23rd session and last sitting this year ended with the appointment of Administrative Court Judge Ante Galić as member of the State Judicial Council.
