Seks informed the EU official about the process of adjustment of Croatia's legislation to that of the EU, underlining that Parliament had completely adjusted 139 laws since 2004, and that two more laws were currently under discussion, Parliament said in a statement.
Rehn said that he was satisfied with the determination of the government and the parliament to implement judicial reform, pointing to its importance in the process of integration with the EU.
National parliaments play an important role in the accession process and later, when a country becomes an EU member, because 50 percent of national legislation is closely related to the EU legislation and political consensus is of great importance, as a sign of support to the country's pro-European policy, Rehn said.
Seks said that there was a political consensus about the main strategic guidelines among Croatian parliamentary parties, although there were some differences regarding exceptions and transitional periods for fisheries and the sale of real estate to foreign nationals, which are considered the most important issues.
Seks went on to say that parties should refrain from using EU-related issues as political ammunition during the 2007 election campaign.
The European Commissioner agreed with Seks, warning that next year would be important for maintaining the pace of reforms and wishing Croatia a lot of luck and success on the road to the EU.
