U.S. ambassador on final solution for Kosovo's status

BELGRADE, Dec 5 (Hina) - U.S. Ambassador to Serbia Michael Polt said on Tuesday he expected a final solution on Kosovo's status to be reached shortly after the parliamentary elections in Serbia, scheduled for January, adding that the elections would show which direction the Serbian people wanted to take and expressing hope the people would make the right choice for the future of their country.

Commenting on statements by Russian Ambassador to Serbia Alexandar Alekseyev that Russia would veto with the UN Security Council if the solution regarding Kosovo's status was not acceptable for either Belgrade or Pristina, Polt said the debate on veto during the decision making process was not constructive.

The decision of citizens at the election scheduled for 21 January 2007 can lead Serbia to Euro-Atlantic associations or to a conflict with neighbours and the international community, Polt said.

Democratic forces in Serbia can be certain that the U.S. would do all that it can to help democracy in Serbia to succeed, Polt said at an international conference on leadership in Belgrade.
