Croatian Cultural Council urges Mesic to relieve advisor of duty

ZAGREB, Oct 4 (Hina) - The Croatian Cultural Council called on Croatian President Stjepan Mesic on Wednesday to relieve of duty his advisor Budimir Loncar, saying that in the contrary Mesic should resign.
ZAGREB, Oct 4 (Hina) - The Croatian Cultural Council called on Croatian President Stjepan Mesic on Wednesday to relieve of duty his advisor Budimir Loncar, saying that in the contrary Mesic should resign.

The nongovernmental organisation said in a statement that in his capacity as foreign minister of the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, Loncar had fought to the very end against the creation of independent Croatia and that this was why he insisted on a ban on the import of arms in 1991.

According to the Council, claims that by advocating the arms embargo before the UN Loncar helped Croatia are cynical untruths, while claims that the embargo primarily damaged the Yugoslav People's Army are nonsensical forgeries because the JNA was armed "to the teeth" and was considered at the time the third biggest military force in Europe.

The Council said the victims of the arms embargo were the unarmed Croats first in Croatia and then in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as Bosnian Muslims.

According to the Council, the fact that Loncar is a presidential advisor now is absurd and unacceptable.

Speaking of Loncar's role in the early 1990s, Mesic has said recently that the attacks on Locar are actually attacks on himself.
