Transparency International Croatia gives passing grade to govt's anti-corruption programme

ZAGREB, Sept 1 (Hina) - Transparency International Croatia (TIH) said on Friday that the implementation of the government's anti-corruption programme deserved a passing grade, despite the fact that not all 15 goals of the programme had been achieved by June 30.
ZAGREB, Sept 1 (Hina) - Transparency International Croatia (TIH) said on Friday that the implementation of the government's anti-corruption programme deserved a passing grade, despite the fact that not all 15 goals of the programme had been achieved by June 30.

TIH president Zorislav Antun Petrovic told reporters that by June 30 the Law on the Transfer of Authority had been changed, the privatisation of the state portfolio had been analysed and a plan for stronger measures for the prevention of conflict of interest drawn up.

The situation in courts and prosecutor's offices was not analysed by June 30 or mid-July, when TIH collected data on the implementation of the anti-corruption programme, TIH officials said.

TIH expects more respect for deadlines for the next five goals which are to be accomplished by the end of September.

TIH's initial analysis of the implementation of the anti-corruption programme focused on compliance with deadlines.

Petrovic said that the further implementation of the programme required establishing a commission to monitor that process.

Answering a reporter's question, Petrovic said that the latest cases of persons being arrested for taking bribe were not the result of the anti-corruption programme, but primarily a consequence of the change of the social climate in which the public recognised corruption as a social evil and decided to do something about it.

TIH called on members of the public with information on cases of corruption to call a toll free phone number where they would be directed to institutions which can help them.
