ZAGREB, Aug 29 (Hina) - Croatians, like most other nations, believe that Israel is responsible for the war in Lebanon, according to an opinion poll conducted by the Croatian agency Puls within a global survey by the Gallup International association.

Forty-one percent of respondents in Croatia believe that the war in Lebanon between Israel and Hezbollah was started by Israel, 18 percent believe it was caused by Hezbollah, and as much as 41 percent could not identify the culprit, Puls said on Tuesday.

The Gallup survey shows that 37 percent of respondents in 33 countries believe that Israel started the war, while 32 percent believe that Hezbollah is to be blamed. Almost one-third of respondents could not answer this question.

Twenty-two percent of Croatians support Israel in the conflict and 14 percent support Hezbollah.

Two-thirds of respondents are undecided about who they support in the conflict, but more than a half believe that the intensity of the Israeli military response is excessive.

Similarly as in other countries, fifty-four percent of respondents in Croatia believe that the United States were involved in the conflict.

One-third of respondents in the countries covered by the survey believe that the United States were directly or indirectly involved in the conflict. Along with the USA, respondents also mentioned Iran, Syria, Islamic extremists and Al Qaeda.

The Gallup survey covered 33 countries and 25,000 respondents, including 1,000 in Croatia.
