ZAGREB, Aug 14 (Hina) - The Croatian government on Monday welcomed the adoption of Resolution 1701 of the UN Security Council which calls for putting an end to the bloodshed in Lebanon and Israel and envisages the sending of UN peace forces numbering 15,000 troops at the most to help the Lebanese army take over control of the southern parts of Lebanon.

"The Government of the Republic of Croatia voices hope that the resolution, based on the proposal from the United States and France, which urges an immediate cessation of hostilities - particularly attacks by Hezbollah on Israel, the deployment of Lebanese forces and significantly reinforced UN peace forces and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the area, can be the basis for a sustainable and lasting cessation of fire and the beginning of attempts to resolve the difficult situation with political means," the government said in a statement.

The government reiterates that it has always advocated a peaceful settlement of conflicts based on international law and voices hope that the crucial factors will demonstrate political will to implement the resolution.

The government underlines that the resolution should facilitate efforts to start dealing with the humanitarian disaster and the issue of displaced people and refugees, as well as the repair of destroyed infrastructure.
