Pasalic writes open letter to Mesic

ZAGREB, June 28 (Hina) - The leader of the nonparliamentary Croatian Bloc (HB) party, Ivic Pasalic, on Wednesday sent an open letter to President Stjepan Mesic refuting Mesic's claims that Pasalic was behind descriptions of Mesic as a personnel officer of Udba, former Socialist Yugoslavia's secret service, in Vecernji List daily and Glas Koncila weekly.

Speaking to the press, Pasalic said he had written the letter because he had to reject "that lie".

In the letter, Pasalic wrote that HB and himself, in accordance with the Council of Europe resolution on communist crimes, advocated lustration in all segments of the state and society, but had nothing to do with Mesic's past in Udba.

Pasalic also wondered if "there is a way in Croatia in which a citizen can defend himself from the slanderous escapades of its president if his ardent love for the truth is protected by immunity of inviolability".

He also said the HB councillors in Knin refused to attend a meeting with Mesic and Serbian President Boris Tadic yesterday because "neither Mesic nor Tadic are persons over whom HB would bring its credibility into question".
