"I do declare that elections will be held at the time envisaged by law, namely in November 2007... It is pointless to speculate about early elections because they most certainly will not take place."
Sanader said he was pleased with the current public support for accession to the European Union.
As for the accession date, he said Croatia would not have a problem joining in 2009 if the European constitution was adopted in 2008 or early 2009. He added that if the constitution was not adopted then, there was always a possibility of finding a way to become a member through an amendment to the Nice agreement.
Commenting on the drop in public support for Croatia's accession to NATO, which is below 50 per cent, Sanader said this was likely because NATO was equated with the war in Iraq, which he added was a mistake. NATO protects the main values of the free world and access to this organisation remains one of our main goals, he told the daily.
The reporter also asked if Branimir Glavas, an independent member of parliament under investigation for war crimes, was exerting pressure on the Zagreb County Court investigating judge by shifting the blame to his alleged superiors, primarily Parliament Speaker Vladimir Seks.
Sanader said Glavas could not put pressure on the judiciary. He maintained that Glavas was trying to put pressure on the public and that his campaign was aimed at convincing the public that this was a political and not a judicial issue.
