PM says Seks can be proud of his role in Homeland War

ZAGREB, June 6 (Hina) - Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader has said that he believes all what Parliament Speaker Vladimir Seks told him about his role during the Homeland Defence War in eastern Slavonia and that all who insist that Seks step down during the ongoing criminal proceedings against war crimes suspect Branimir Glavas ask for Seks's resignation only for petty political reasons.

"With regard to Seks's role in the Homeland Defence War, I believe him and in all what he told me. I know that he had an exceptionally great role in the Homeland Defence War and in efforts to establish the defensive capacity of the Republic of Croatia, notably in Slavonia. I think he can be proud of this, and all of us with him. Suggestions (by some opposition leaders) asking him to voluntarily strip himself of the immunity is sheer politicking," Sanader told reporters in the government's building in Zagreb on Tuesday.

Commenting on yesterday's scandal when Seks was prevented from giving a talk at a ceremony in Osijek when Osijek-Baranja County marked its day, Sanader added that the chairman of the Croatian parliament is an institution in Croatia that all should respect.

"I do not like the manner in which the opposition is trying to score political points," Sanader said adding that Seks should have been given an opportunity to address the gathering in the eastern city of Osijek.

Seks arrived at the assembly session at the invitation of County Prefect Kresimir Bubalo and the assembly's chairman as a guest. The Sabor Speaker said that he had intended to give a talk at the session but was told by top county officials that it was too late and that the schedule of the event did not include his address. Seks said that he had intended to say that good projects in the county would enjoy backing from the national parliament.

Responding to Seks, Prefect Bubalo, who is perceived in the public as one of Glavas's closest friends, told reporters that he expected Seks to stop paying lip service to local projects. As in previous years, the schedule of the event envisaged an address by the highest state official attending the ceremony, Bubalo said, thanking President Mesic for his speech at the ceremony.
