Opposition slams possibility for means tests in public health system

ZAGREB, June 6 (Hina) - Parliamentary deputies of the Opposition and the ruling coalition were divided over the assessment of the situation in public health and on the proposal to introduce means tests for possible beneficiaries of free health services.
ZAGREB, June 6 (Hina) - Parliamentary deputies of the Opposition and the ruling coalition were divided over the assessment of the situation in public health and on the proposal to introduce means tests for possible beneficiaries of free health services.

Imposing means tests would be yet another trick against citizens, Zeljka Antunovic of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) told the parliament during a debate on a draft five-year national health development strategy presented earlier in the day by Minister Neven Ljubicic.

Pero Kovacevic of the Croatian Party of Rights (HSP) believes that means tests would be introduced since the government was following instructions from the International Monetary Fund.

Some MPs expressed fear that health would be a privilege of the rich in the future.

Ljubicic replied that benefits should be given to the most vulnerable categories and that the country should finally get rid of the socialist model of public health.
