Serbian PM rejects EU's offer of assistance in process of dissolution of state union

BELGRADE, June 2 (Hina) - Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica on Friday rejected an offer by the European Union to assist in the process of dissolution of the state union of Serbia and Montenegro after Montenegrin voters opted for independence in the May 21 referendum.

"Things are quite clear. Serbia is the successor to the state union. The Serbian Assembly will adopt a decision confirming that fact and instructing the government and all institutions to take the necessary steps to assume the succession," Kostunica told reporters after meeting the EU High Commissioner for the Common Foreign and Security Policy, Javier Solana.

Kostunica stressed that all the existing problems between Belgrade and Podgorica "can be and will be resolved."

Kostunica criticised the EU for its position on the referendum, citing irregularities in the voting process and claiming that Montenegrin nationals living in Serbia had been denied the right to vote.

Solana said that Kostunica had made it clear that Serbia did not need any assistance in the dissolution process and that therefore the EU would act accordingly.

After talks with Foreign Minister Vuk Draskovic, Solana said that the continuation of European integration was a priority for Serbia but that the country should first ensure full cooperation with the Hague war crimes tribunal.

Solana stressed that Serbia, after the independence referendum in Montenegro, should accept Montenegro's independence, expressing hope that both countries would cooperate and eventually join the European community of nations.

Both meetings also focused on the issue of Kosovo.

Kostunica told Solana that the settlement of Kosovo's status would also be a serious test for the EU, while Draskovic called for the protection of the Serb minority in Kosovo and the application of the standard under which the borders in the Balkans should not be changed.

Draskovic said that the Serbs would be confronted with a feeling of humiliation should an Albanian state be created in the territory of Serbia and that it should not be allowed.
